Paul was born in Bristol in 1969. On leaving school in the mid eighties, Paul trained as an engineer but found this didn't fulfill his creative urges, so he left work in 1993 to pursue his dream. After graduating from Derby University with a BA (hons) Fine Art in 1998 he moved to Nottingham and is currently based in Thingland Studios at the Oldknows Factory.

In his paintings Paul works freely with a palette knife, without preparatory sketches, photos or life models to create evocative figurative works in acrylic paint on canvas and board. Arches and doorways are recurring motifs in his painted work.

As Paul doesn't use preparatory sketches for his paintings, but as an inveterate doodler since childhood, his drawings and illustrations are a parallel practice which fulfills that side of his creativity. He draws using pens and pencils which are complete in their own right but also colours them by hand or using digital manipulation.

Paul's artwork is inspired by his inner world, which is full of the strange films, curious books, alternative music, unusual art and architecture he has absorbed over the years.

Paul is one quarter of Danse Macabre (www.dansemacabre-art.co.uk), which has curated three exhibitions in Nottingham and one in London since January 2007. Their Pit of Curiosities events in 2009 and 2010 (part of Nottingham Light Night) used live art and special effects to create 'sidehows' which paid homage to the Victorian freakshow.

Paul has found balancing creative fulfillment with earning a living challenging but feels rewarded by the inspirational people he has met en route.
