About Me
Paul was born in Bristol in 1969. On leaving school in the mid eighties, due to a series of miscalculated decisions, Paul had several years of trying to reconcile sensible career-path choices with creative urges, and failing disastrously left work in 1993 to pursue his dream. After graduating from Derby University with a BA(Hons) Fine Art in 1998 he moved to Nottingham and is currently based in Thingland Studios at the Oldknows Factory.
Paul's artwork is inspired by his inner world, which is full of the strange films, curious books, alternative music, unusual art and architecture he has absorbed over the years. For his paintings Paul works freely with a palette knife, to create evocative figurative works in acrylic paint on canvas and board. Arches and doorways are recurring motifs in his painted work. Paul, an inveterate doodler since childhood, doesn't use preparatory for his paintings so his drawings and illustrations have become a parallel practice which fulfils that side of his creativity. He draws using pens and pencils, but also colours them by hand or using digital manipulation.
Paul is a co-founder of Danse Macabre (www.dansemacabre-art.co.uk), which has curated three exhibitions in Nottingham and one in London since January 2007. Their Pit of Curiosities events in 2009 and 2010 (part of Nottingham Light Night) used live art and special effects to create 'sidehows' which paid homage to the Victorian freakshow.
As well as a practising artist, Paul is also a technician at the Crocus Gallery in Lenton, Nottingham and since volunteering there in August 2010 has become one of the core members.
Paul has found balancing creative fulfillment with earning a living challenging but feels rewarded by the inspirational people he has met en route.
