Horizon is not only the name given to the apparent line which divides the earth and sky, it can also be used to describe the limit or boundary of a person’s mental perception, experience or interest. The original sense of the Greek word ‘horizon’ is "to limit". And for every one of us our horizon is the illusory limit we choose to accept in our lives whether it is physical, intellectual or spiritual.

Jennifer Blant, Paul Bowring and Andy Cole, the 3 artists in this exhibition, invite you to see some of their recent work inspired by this need to explore these illusory horizons.

Jennifer Blant’s work is a collection of several semi-abstracted seascapes inspired by her 6 month residency on the Hebridean island of Colonsay, which ended in February this year. Also included in the show are some of her more expressionistic works about the people and situations she meets in her life. Jennifer’s painterly work is richly coloured and textured, with a bold and assured mastery of her medium. Jennifer’s interest is in the horizon as a place where energy is created as two elements (physical or otherwise) appear to meet, but never actually do so.

Paul Bowring’s strong monochrome paintings are imbued with a sense of mystery, an aura of other-worldliness and the essence of Gothic Romanticism. There seems to be an underlying narrative in his images which is never fully revealed, with figures poised on the edge of something unknown and maybe terrifying. Paul takes inspiration for his work from music literature and film. Paul’s work crosses the illusory boundaries that we create around our everyday reality and explores the darker reaches of our imagination beyond the light of reason.

Andy Cole’s exquisite pen and ink drawings are executed with immense intricacy and skill and often possess a subtle and dark sense of humour. Andy is inspired by Forteana, dark fantasy and generally "Out There" X-Files type experiences that life throws into the mix. Andy Cole is a voyager beyond the event horizon of the conventional, bringing back his dark matter to share with anyone brave enough to shed their preconceptions.
